23-year-old Gets 18 Months For Drug Trafficking

A 23-year-old man, Opeyemi Gafar has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for peddling 100g of Cannabis Sativa (hemp).

Gafar was sentenced on Monday by a Federal High Court in Lagos State.

He had been arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on one-count of drug trafficking and he pleaded guilty to the charge.

According to the NDLEA, Gafar was arrested on August 25 while selling the banned substance at Abijan Bus Stop in Ajah.

The Prosecutor, Jeremiah Aernan tendered a written statement by Gafar, a drug analysis form, a request for scientific aid form and a remnant of the banned substance which the Court admitted in evidence and marked as exhibits.

Aernan then went further to urge the court to convict and sentence Gafar based on his plea and evidence.

The judge, Justice Chuka Obiozor, consequently convicted him and ordered that his sentence should take effect from the date of his arrest.

The judge, however, gave the convict an option of N50,000 fine.
