President Muhammadu Buhari has warned that any act of hooliganism hiding behind peaceful protests in order to disrupt public peace will be dealt with decisively.
The President said this on Monday while virtually declaring open the Chief of Army Staff’s Annual Conference 2020, from the State House in Abuja.
“I want to reiterate our government’s commitment to the rights of citizens to embark on peaceful protests,” Buhari said.
“However, this must be done responsibly and in accordance with the laws of the land.
“I also wish to state that any act of hooliganism hiding behind lawful and peaceful protests will be dealt with decisively to ensure the peace and stability of our nation.”
The President’s statement comes as some Nigerians planned to resume the #EndSARS protests in some states of the federation.
The President noted that hoodlums hijacked the peaceful protests, killing, maiming and destroying public and private properties.
He went further in his comment to commend the Nigerian Armed Forces for restoring law and order across the country during the #EndSARS protests in October.
“I commend the Armed Force for their efforts which helped restore law and order in many states during the large-scale criminality that ensued in the wake of the #EndSARS protests,” Buhari said.
