#EndSARS: ICC Commences Investigation into Lekki Tollgate Shooting
The International Criminal Court (ICC) disclosed that it had commenced a preliminary investigation into the recent #EndSARS protests in Nigeria.
The office of the ICC prosecutor had earlier stated that it had received information on the alleged crimes.
The Court also made it clear that the probe will “assess whether the legal criteria for opening an investigation under the Rome Statute are met.”
The #EndSARS protest, which began in Lagos on October 8, quickly spread like wild fire majorly in the southern part of Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Some days later, police were seen confronting and dispersing peaceful protesters in Lagos and the FCT with tears gas, water cannons and live bullets in some cases.
Hoodlums started attacking the protesters and everything later turned to chaos.
The shooting of armless protesters on Tuesday, October 20 at Lekki tollgate in Lagos by security agents believed to be soldiers remains the talking point and one of the major events of the #EndSARS protest.
The ICC assured that it would make findings of the preliminary examination public.
