Ex-SARS Officer Sentenced To Death For Extra-judicial Killing, Stealing
A dismissed constable, Joseph Omotosho, who served with the defunct Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS), has been sentenced to death by a High Court in Benin, the Edo State capital.
Omotosho had conspired with four other constables to murder a car dealer, identified as Benson Obodeh, who was listed among suspected criminal gang.
The dismissed constable was also accused of stealing certain amount of money from the deceased’s bank account.
The Court found Omotosho and others guilty on eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy to steal and murder.
The presiding judge, Justice Ohimai Ovbiagele, therefore, sentenced Omotosho to death by hanging or with chemical infusion as an alternative on conspiracy to commit murder and was also handed seven years imprisonment for stealing.
However, the sentences of the four other dismissed constables were suspended due to their absence in the court.
The four constables, Adeleke Adedeji, Abena John, Oniyo Musa and Henry Shobowole, were said to have escaped from prison during the #EndSARS protest in October 2020.
